Mood Series

A growing series since 2017.

These moody paintings are each done with a limited palette. I select just 2 or 3 colors that I feel reflect my mood at the time and then compose them almost exclusively from my imagination or memory. These paintings are intended to convey emotions without using animals or people as subjects. I started this series because I needed a way to express raw emotions and felt that using the interaction between light and color would be an effective way to do it.

I prefer to create these without reference photos because I find copying from a photo to be distracting as I get sucked into a fixation on tiny details, but the purpose of the Mood Series is to portray emotion, not realism. I’ve found that it works best if I focus on the light and colors instead of on living subjects and fine details.
